On Friday 29 April 2016, and after three years of construction, the new and refurbished facilities at Greensward Academy were officially opened.
Guests included The Rt Hon M Francois MP, Cllr Mrs H Glynn, Chair of Rochford District Council, our new Principal from September Mrs K Scarnell, former Principal Mr D Triggs, staff and parents present, past and future.
The event was started with a speech from Principal Mrs Debbie Stokes and a film charting the history of Greensward. Exciting performances followed from our District Gymnastics Champions, Nicholas Campen (Year 10) - a Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge finalist, Rebecca Aburn (Year 9) - Irish Dancer, Sixth Form singers, the Year 7 Choir, the Year 7 singers and band and the cast of this year's musical theatre production of Hairspray.
This was followed by a tour of the facilities and the official unveiling of the plaque by The Rt Hon M Francois. Mr Francois commented that he thought that the academy had spent the government grant very well and that this would not have come to fruition without Mrs Stokes' personal determination and leadership. She was a truly inspirational leader for the school. He said "Greensward is an outstanding school with outstanding staff and it now has an outstanding set of buildings as well in which to help build the young people of the future."
Youngest student Sophia Akintunde, Year 7, joined Mrs J Sleebush who was one of the first students to arrive at the new Greensward School in 1960 and Mr Triggs to raise the Greensward, the Union and the Academies Enterprise Trust flags at the end of the ceremony.
In her speech, Mrs Stokes said:
"As I prepare for my retirement at the end of this academic year, I am reminded of the words of T S Eliot:
Whilst the summer may mark an end, today celebrates the beginning: I am proud that we have a new academy fit for the world class learners we all aspire to become and am confident that we can only continue to 'make our best better'."
