Boys and girls teams from Greensward Academy qualified for the next round of the Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Cup after an exceptional effort on Wednesday evening.
This was the first time that the academy has entered this competition and it was a great opportunity to visit such an amazing facility used by elite athletes from all over the world.
The performances of the students were fitting for such a venue. The girls’ team made light work of the competition winning their first round event comfortably. The boys’ event was a much tougher competition; they worked hard and showed great resilience to snatch 2nd place and also qualify for the next round.
It would be difficult to pick out individuals with so many fantastic performances, but special mentions go to Georgie Copeman who stepped up to perform in the 300 metres race, despite very little experience in this event to finish in 1st place. And superb final legs from Isabel Rodriguez and Kwabena Koomson in both relays to overtake other schools and claim 2nd place.
Finally a special mention to Nicholas Campen who came along to represent the academy as an athletics official. This helped to earn the team valuable points and also will help Nicholas with the practical part of his GCSE PE course.
