SENIOR RUGBY CHAMPIONS

The Senior Rugby Team competed in the final round of the Essex Schools Rugby Festival on Wednesday. The boys played against five other teams that had won their area finals. The boys played some great rugby, helped by a very dominant pack of forwards who did not lose a scrum throughout the tournament.  Even with a couple of injuries the boys stuck together and played outstanding rugby to go undefeated and be crowned Essex Schools Rugby Festival Champions 2014. A fantastic achievement!

U16 GIRLS BASKETBALL – ESSEX CUP WINNERS FOR THE FOURTH TIME

On Monday 17 March, the U16 girls basketball team competed in the Essex Cup school finals against Great Baddow.  Unfortunately, one of our vital team players, Zoe Willis, was injured but helped coach and support the team. The game started with a fast tempo and Greensward clinched the first few baskets scored by Summer Osborne and Chelsea Locke. From this great start, Great Baddow fought back with two baskets, making it an even game.

Nerves were high, but Captain Megan Jones found her range and scored a 3 pointer.  Down the other end our defence was strong and we had some great rebounds from Abigail Miloslawer and Rhian Simpson. The girls used frequent fast breaks to use the full court which then resulted in more baskets from Amber Evans and Ria Toovey. At the end of the first quarter it was 22-16 to Greensward.

The second quarter was still highly competitive with both teams driving to the basket. We settled into the game with some great interceptions from Lauren Allen and outstanding teamwork from the girls.  Although it was a very low scoring quarter we still produced lay ups from Toovey and Simpson.  Anxiously, the gap between the teams closed with Greensward still just winning by 27-23.

After half time, the girls were pumped and determined to grasp a bigger lead. The third quarter opened with lay ups from Locke, Jones and Osborne. Meanwhile, Vaughan took control of rebounds and Jones had a further 3 pointer. Also, two of our smallest players, Toovey and Osborne, made it to the basket and got foul shots. Then, Miloslawer scored a brilliant swish just inside the 3 point line. Yet, Baddow continued to respond with further baskets.  To finish the third quarter we had more shots from Evans and Allen which ended the score with Greensward 50-38.

The final quarter had the girls excited with only 10 minutes to hold the shield and they therefore wanted to use all of the 24 seconds holding the ball.  Both teams were in team fouls which contributed to Miloslawer, Jones, Vaughan and Osborne all having foul shots from driving to the basket. To continue on our defence Allen and Simpson blocked the key players which prevented Baddow from scoring.

Finally, the buzzer went and fantastically the Greensward girls had won by 63-51.  Incredibly this was the team’s 4th year of winning the Essex Cup Finals in a row. I would like to thank all those who provided support at the game; it was a great team performance.

11s: Megan Jones, Abigal Miloslawer and Kate Vaughan. Year 10s: Zoe Willis (injured), Amber Evans and Summer Osborne. Year 9s: Lauren Allen, Chelsea Locke, Rhian Simpson and Ria Toovey and our special thanks to our coach Mr Stevenson.
