U15 Girls through to National Finals

posted 1 May 2014, 07:37 by Shirley Wheeler

Huge congratulations to the U15 girls basketball team, who, for the second year running, has reached the final fours of the national basketball competition.  The team travelled to Northampton School for Girls to play an exact re-run of last year at this of the competition and so knowing that they would be in for a tough game.

The game started with Nottingham dominating rebounds and taking an early lead after Greensward missed a few easy chances to put some early points on the board.   Nottingham continued to dominate possession and at the end of the first quarter they led 13-9.  At the start of the second quarter, the Greensward girls looked nervous but knew that they had to match Nottingham’s determination.  They soon found their stride and scored 10 consecutive points without any reply from their opponents.  Sarah Round, Nottingham’s captain and England player, scored an impressive 3 pointer, but in quick succession Amber Evans replied with a 3 pointer of her own.

Greensward continued to dominate the third quarter scoring 23 points and only conceding 9, putting them in the lead by 10 points at half time.   Nottingham came out fighting to try and pull the score back in the third quarter and did this by scoring 3 baskets and narrowing the gap to 4 points.  Towards the end of the quarter Nottingham’s intensity dropped and Zoe Willis capitalised scoring 8 points in the final few minutes to give the team a lead of 12.

In the final quarter the girls knew that Nottingham would be putting more pressure on the ball; this created more space and with crisp passing Greensward scored 16 points to only a 3 point reply from Nottingham.  However, with huge determination, Nottingham then had a late surge scoring 7 points but with an impressive defensive display Greensward held on to their lead to a victorious win of 64-44.

The team consisting of Zoe Willis, Amber Evans, Summer Osborne, Georgia-Blue Logan, Chelsea Locke, Rhian Simpson, Ria Toovey and Lauren Allen will now complete in the final fours in Nottingham on 17 May.  We will be keeping everything crossed for them!
